Segmented shells are made from stacked blocks of solid wood with horizontal grain orientation and adjoined via offset miter joints for added strength. The resulting angular structure is then lathed into a smooth cylindrical shape. This technique provides visual & structural solidarity among different species of wood, and sonically falls in between stave and steambent options.
